What Is Sinker EDM?
Sinker EDM (also known as Cavity EDM or Ram EDM) is a type of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) process. It removes metal material by creating controlled electrical sparks between a custom-shaped electrode (usually copper or graphite) and the workpiece, which are submerged in a dielectric fluid.
Unlike Wire EDM, which cuts completely through material, Sinker EDM forms complex cavities, deep slots, and fine details by eroding the metal surface according to the electrode’s shape. It is widely used in mold making, precision machining, and hard metal processing.

What is the difference between sinker EDM and ram EDM?
Sinker EDM and ram EDM are synonymous terms. Both refer to the same die sinking EDM process where a custom-shaped electrode is “sunk” into the workpiece to create complex cavities. The term “ram EDM” comes from the machine’s ram (vertical spindle) that holds and moves the electrode.
Can you handle large-scale production with sinker EDM?
Yes! We specialize in both prototype and high-volume sinker EDM production. Our advanced equipment and automated processes allow us to handle orders from 1 to 10,000+ parts with consistent quality. We offer volume discounts for large orders and can scale production to meet your manufacturing needs.
What CAD file formats do you accept for sinker EDM machining?
We accept all standard CAD file formats, including STEP (.step, .stp), IGES (.iges, .igs), STL (.stl), DWG (.dwg), DXF (.dxf), and PDF (.pdf) for 2D drawings. For optimal results, we recommend STEP or IGES files as they preserve 3D geometry across different CAD software.
What is the typical lead time for sinker EDM projects?
Lead time depends on project complexity, quantity, and electrode fabrication requirements. For prototypes or small batches, lead time is 3-7 business days. For high-volume production or complex parts, lead time is 7-14 business days. Urgent projects are available with expedited processing (24-48 hour turnaround for simple parts).
How do you ensure quality control for sinker EDM parts?
Our quality control process covers every stage:
Design Review before machining
Real-Time Monitoring during EDM
Final Verification using CMM and surface testers
Full Documentation with Certificates of Conformance
ISO 9001:2015 & AS9100 Certified
